A Couple Powerful Videos

--Andy Grant, November 26, 2010

This past week, I've been turned on to a couple fantastic videos. Each of these moved me to tears, though for very different reasons, and I love them both.

First, a little secret. When I'm trying to change my own mood, I'll sometimes sing the old ditty, This Little Light of Mine.

This little light of mine,
I'm gonna let it shine
This little light of mine,
I'm gonna let it shine
This little light of mine,
I'm gonna let it shine
Let it shine,
Let it shine,
Let it shine.
(I only know the first verse, so it gets repeated a lot.  I'll also bust into I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart., when I'm really rockin' it.)

Usually, I sing it with the childlike joy of Rod and Todd Flanders from The Simpsons.  In fact, I may have gotten it from them.  Many spiritual traditions and teachings talk about shining your Light; lighting your inner spark or flame. This music video from Katy Perry for Firework simply took my breath away when I first saw it. I'm glad to have a new song to sing in the shower. Enjoy!

The Acknowledgment Movie is based on a true story that happened about thirty years ago. It is centered on a simple, moving, truth: Who I am makes a difference. I have no problem telling you that this video had me bawling, even with repeated viewings. I find it to be very powerful and hope you do as well.

Who YOU are does make a difference.

What Are You Thankful For?

--Andy Grant, November 22, 2010

Since this is Thanksgiving week in the United States, I've been thinking about what I'm thankful for.  I encourage you to find some quiet time this week, and every week, to ponder all the things in your life that you are thankful for.

Sign up for my email list and stay informed about the latest with my book, Surviving Myself, and this site. You can also subscribe to the RSS Feed to be informed about each new posting.

Enjoy!

One thing I didn't mention in the video is that this week my book proposal is being sent to a few agents.  Woohoo!  Now I get to face one of my biggest fears, discovering whether anyone in publishing gives a crap about my book.  That is quickly followed by another huge fear, that someone in publishing does want my book.  Either way, fears and challenges are overcome, so it is all good.

National Survivors of Suicide Day: November 20, 2010

On Saturday, November 20, 2010, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) will be sponsoring its 12th  annual National Survivors of Suicide Day. This event, designed to reach out to those who have lost a loved one to suicide, offers participants a chance to connect with other survivors for support and healing.

Conferences will be offered in cities nationwide, with those conferences being linked by a live national broadcast by satellite/webcast from 1-2:30 p.m. EST. The conference will be broadcast live on the AFSP website at the same time, followed by an online chat. (Register here to watch from your computer.) Many of the conference sites will also hold panel discussions, workshops and other activities both for survivors and for professionals.

260 simultaneous conferences for survivors of suicide loss will take place throughout the U.S. and around the world. This unique network of healing conferences helps survivors connect with others who have survived the tragedy of suicide loss, and express and understand the powerful emotions they experience. Find a conference site near you.
